Super Bowl XLIII wrapup (ViewFromVegas with every graded prop)

By DAVE TULEY (Copyright ViewFromVegas.com 2009)

LAS VEGAS — Super Bowl XLIII was a wise guy's wet dream. When the game was over with the Steelers beating the Cardinals 27-23 (after a projected final of 27-20 if you go by the Steelers -7 and total of 47), most stats come out as expected, even if the details were totally unexpected with a pedestrian first half (except for James Harrison's 100-yard interception return that brought a crazy end to the half) and a wild back-and-forth finish.

Sharp bettors who liked the Cardinals won with their wagers of +7 and even +7.5, while those ...<< MORE >>

Kentucky Derby review . . . Triple Crown odds

Big Brown came through in a big way in winning the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby last Saturday. He overcame the No. 20 post as well as questions about his lack of experience with only three previous lifetime starts.
As the 2-1 favorite, he paid $6.80 to win, far below the over/under on the winning horse's pari-mutuel (the line was $16.70 at Wynn Las Vegas and $19 at Station Casinos). With so much on him in the win pool and relatively smaller amounts in the place and show pools, those might have been better value as he paid $5 to ...<< MORE >>

NCAA title game recap/Masters preview

After an NCAA men's basketball tournament that had more routs than nail-biters, the title game on Monday night in San Antonio was worth the wait. Kansas rallied to send the game to overtime and then won 75-68 for the outright upset of favored Memphis. Underdog bettors and bookmakers were happy to see Kansas pull off upsets in their last two games to claim the championship as favorites went 39-24 against the spread (61.9 percent).
Sports books here were rocking and bettors were also following their proposition bets, not that the game needed any more excitement. The Wynn Las Vegas ...<< MORE >>

Friday's NCAA recap of Round 1 games

After favorites went 12-4 against the spread Thursday, things started out different on Friday as all four underdogs in the early games grabbed early leads. And in a lot of ways we did, especially the sub-regional in Tampa Bay, Fla., where all four lower-numbered seeds won as underdogs.

Thursday's NCAA recap of Round 1 games

Thursday's NCAA tournament tipped off at 9:20 a.m. VFV Time (that's ViewFromVegas time, aka Pacific Daylights Savings Time) and it looked like a typical March Madness as No. 14 seed Georgia, a 9-point underdog, gave No. 3 Xavier fits for most of their game. But Xavier rallied to not only win but also to cover in a 73-61 victory as Georgia missed their desperation 3-pointers ...<< MORE >>

Underdogs bite back in Week 15

After going 4-12, 5-10, 7-9 and 4-12 against the spread the previous four weeks, NFL underdogs bounced back by going 10-6 ATS in Week 15.
The bookend games were especially profitable for underdog bettors as the Texans started off the weekend early with a 31-13 win over the Broncos as a 2.5-point underdog on Thursday night and then the 49ers knocked off the Bengals 20-13 as 9-point dogs on Saturday night. After going 6-6 ATS in Sunday's day games, the Redskins beat the Giants 22-10 as 6-point underdogs on Sunday night and then the Bears covered the 10.5-point spread in a 20-13 loss to the Vikings on Monday night.

Pats stay 'perfect' -- but fail to cover again

Monday night's game between the Patriots and Ravens was much closer than most people anticipated (though I had the Ravens +20.5 as one of my top five of the week and the line did get bet down to 17.5 at one point Monday before closing at 19 at most Vegas sports books). The Ravens showed up with an inspired performance as they played their best game of the year, but the Patriots came through in the end for a 27-24 victory to keep their quest alive for a perfect season.
However, it was the third time in the last four games ...<< MORE >>

Cowboys win, cover vs. Packers; Orleans horse contest result; preview of NHC qualifier this weekend

Thursday night's Packers-Cowboys game lived up to most of its hype as the Cowboys won 37-27 and secured the inside track to having home field throughout the NFC playoffs.
Of course, it didn't work out as most people expected as Brett Favre suffered a rare injury and was replaced admirably by Aaron Rodgers. Still, the two teams battled with the Cowboys building a 27-10 lead but the Packers battling back as they have all year.
It was especially entertaining for gamblers as the game went back and forth in the second half in relation to the 7-point spread in ...<< MORE >>

Packers move atop NFL ATS Standings

The Patriots have dominated NFL discussions so far this season with their undefeated run through 11 games, but they've now failed to cover the spread in two of their last three games and the new team atop the NFL ATS Standings is the Packers at 9-1-1 while the Patriots are tied for second at 9-2 along with the surprising Browns. Patriots finally lose (vs. spread)

This season's game of the year is behind us as the Patriots beat the Colts 24-20 on Sunday.
It seemed to be all anyone wanted to talk about this past week. What really struck me was how widely discussed the point spread was in newspaper, radio and TV reports. Every one seemed to know the Patriots were favored by around 5 points. At Super Bowl time, everyone hears about the point spread, but it's rare to see this much attention given to a line during the regular season. Even the coaches talked openly about the spread, which ...<< MORE >>

Pats-Colts the talk of town (and everywhere else)

It's Tuesday, and after an action-packed weekend (wall-to-wall football, World Series, Breeders' Cup, etc.) and a lot of other action coming this week (including NBA season opening), it's amazing that all every one seems to want to talk about is Sunday's matchup between the Patriots and Colts. The media machine has already reached a frenzy and it looks like it's going to be the most hyped regular-season game that any of us has ever seen. A few weeks ago, as reported at ViewFromVegas.com, the Patriots were posted as a 1.5-point favorite in the advance odds available at the Las Vegas Hilton, which calls its list the "Games of the Year," though this game is being given the singular title. Last week, when the Hilton regularly puts up lines on all games 12 days in advance, the line had been increased to Patriots -4. Then, both teams went out and dominated their opponents — the Colts whipping the Panthers 31-7 and the Patriots routing the Redskins 52-7. When the Hilton posted its "opening" number at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, the oddsmakers increased the line to Pats -6. The number quickly got bet down to 5, but then got bet back to 6 . . .<< MORE >>

Pigskin Postmortem for Sept. 15-16

After favorites went 9-6-1 against the spread in Week 1 of the NFL, there was a lot of grumbling from Las Vegas bookmakers about the lack of parity in the NFL and how the public was cashing in on all the favorites.
However, this Sunday we saw a turnaround in the market (and then some) as underdogs covered seven of the eight early games and ended the day 11-3-1 against the spread with only the Steelers, Cowboys and Patriots covering as favorites. The Lions-Vikings game was the push as the Lions won 20-17 in overtime as a 3-point favorite

Early college scoring has been 'under'whelming

The first two days of the college football season are in the books, and even though the rule change with teams kicking off from the 30 instead of the 35 has resulted in teams seeing a little better starting field position, the 'over'all impact has been 'under'whelming.
In fact of the seven games on the betting boards in Las Vegas on Thursday night, the only five that had totals posted all went under the closing number. It wasn't until Washington defeated Syracuse 42-12 on Friday night that a college game went over the total.

Tiger holds on, and other weekend results

As usual, Tiger Woods was the overwhelming favorite heading into this past weekend's PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. He was the 2-1 top choice at the Las Vegas Hilton and even lower at other sports books in town. Bonds on 3-2 pitch in the fifth vs. a lefty

When Barry Bonds hit career home run No. 756 on Tuesday night at AT&T Park in San Francisco in the fifth inning on a 3-2 pitch from Washington left-hander Mike Bacsik, there was a mad scramble in the right-center-field bleachers for the coveted ball. On sports recap shows, there was a scramble to put the record-breaking feat in the context of the so-called steroids era.

A-Rod beat Bonds, Hall of Fame Game, PGA

A lot has been made about what a historic weekend this was for baseball. Barry Bonds has been chasing Hank Aaron's career home run mark of 755 while Alex Rodriguez was also closing in on joining the 500 club. On Saturday afternoon, A-Rod hit his 500th while Bonds hit No. 755 later that same night in his first at-bat, but he wasn't able to break the record. With so much media coverage about Bonds chasing Aaron since last year, a lot of people were probably surprised that Rodriguez reached the milestone first, but the events of Saturday actually concluded a proposition wager offered earlier this season in Las Vegas . . . << MORE >>

After a strong start in Thursday's opening round, Garcia was lowered to 6-1, and after Friday's round Sherman made Garcia a heavy 9-4 favorite (just over 2-1). The AL, despite being the road team at AT&T Park in San Francisco, had opened as a -125 favorite (risk $1.25 for every $1 you want to profit) and bettors had jumped all over that seemingly cheap price on the league that had won the last nine MLB All-Star Games ...<< MORE >>
